* Genetics - Carrier Identification...A carrier is a person who has an abnormal copy of a gene. A carrier can pass an inherited (genetic) disease on to his or her...has an abnormal copy of a gene.
I was researching the value of knowing the history of the family tree as compared to possible health related issues and found a wealth of 'NEED TO KNOW' information. Try clicking on our link for 'family tree' to see more detailed information. I found there are actually ...literally hundreds of inherited diseases. In most cases, it is extremely important to know your family tree lineage in order to pinpoint potential problems and possible remedies.
Types of inherited diseases:
Autosomal dominant
Single gene disorder
Autosomal recessive
X-linked dominant
X-linked recessive
Y linkage
Mitochondrial disease
Multifactorial and polygenic (complex) disorders
As you can see, there are a number of 'scary' diseases that can be inherited. In many or most cases, knowing what is running in your own family tree line will give you a 'heads-up' and hopefully help you in the preventative aspects of diseases that might present a problem to you somewhere along your life path.
My suggestion is to do the research of any disorders that do appear in your relatives. Knowledge is a wonderful thing. Tell you doctor of any concerns and insist on 'real' answers when you visit your doctor.
